COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Three volumes of course materials: two volumes for the Course in Practical Mechanics, circa 1889-1896 (part 1: Wood working; part 2: Metal working), and one volume for courses in the Machine Design department (1903-1904). The Machine Design volume includes course outlines and sample problem sets with illustrations, some on blueprint paper.
Four volumes of student Master's theses for the Sibley College School of Marine Construction, labeled "Examples of work in design and special problems," 1900-1903. Included are theses by Charles H. Delany, Paul Percy Bird, Horace Warren Deved, J.D. Clair Smith, G. Kohler, Sidney Graves Koon, William Alphonso Rowe, Leonard Griffin Shepard, and Richard J. Donovan. The theses are copiously illustrated with tables and graphs, most on blueprint paper.
Also, six volumes (two copies, three volumes each) of student and faculty reports on mechanical equipment (dated 1902), illustrated with photographs, cyanotypes, graphs, and tables. Vols. 1-2 have spine title "Mechanical laboratory equipment, students' reports." Vol. 1 focuses on a description of the history, operation, buildings, and equipment of Sibley College's Dept. of Experimental Engineering. Vol. 2 consists of reports on tests of mechanical equipment. Vol. 3 has spine title "Investigation and research. Effect of cold rolling, Prof. H. Diederichs," and consists of a report on the effect of cold rolling on the physical properties of steel, prefaced by a letter from H. (Herman) Diederichs to R.H. (Robert Henry) Thurston, Director of Sibley College.
