Biographical / Historical

The jurisdiction of the Brotherhood encompassed the contracts covering the employment of engineers, firemen, hostlers, and hostler-helpers.
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginement (BLFE) was founded in 1873 at Port Jervis, N.Y. by Joshua Leach and ten Erie Railroad firemen. Founded as the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, the name was changed in 1906 to include Enginemen. The Brotherhood's International Headquarters, designated as the Grand Lodge, was located in Cleveland.
