Abstract:
Consists of a manuscript notebook containing a poll of union members and union officials
employed on the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad. The poll concerned the merger which created
the United Transportation Union. Also included are miscellaneous materials from railroad
companies.

John Collins is a lawyer and government employee. At the time he accumulated these
documents he was a fireman employed on the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad out of Buffalo,
N.Y. and a law student. These materials were gathered for a research paper for a University
of of Buffalo seminar.
Consists of a manuscript notebook containing a poll of union members and union officials
employed on the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad. The poll concerned the merger which created
the United Transportation Union.
Questions were raised concerning the necessity of the merger and its effects, especially
at the local level. Also included are notes of interviews with brakemen, engineers,
firemen, trainmen, conductors and carmen and notes on the organizing efforts of the
new union. This collection also contains routine railroad forms and documents.
